Specialized Surgical Care for Feline Urinary Problems

Perineal urethrostomy (PU) is a surgical procedure that creates a wider urinary opening in male cats to help reduce the risk of recurrent urethral blockages. At Canyon Lake Veterinary Hospital, our team can evaluate your cat's urinary concerns and discuss appropriate treatment options when blockages become recurrent or difficult to manage.

Recovery and Aftercare

After PU surgery, cats need careful monitoring, prescribed medications, and a clean environment to support healing. Follow-up examinations help your veterinarian monitor the surgical site and urinary function. Although the procedure can reduce the risk of future blockages, it does not eliminate the possibility of urinary problems or bladder inflammation.

Important: A cat that is straining to urinate, repeatedly visiting the litter box, or producing little to no urine needs urgent veterinary attention. A complete urinary blockage can be life-threatening.

When Is PU Surgery Recommended?

Recurrent Urinary Blockages

Repeated episodes in which urine cannot pass normally through the urethra.

Urethral Obstruction

Blockages caused by material such as plugs or small stones.

Urethral Damage
or Narrowing

Conditions that interfere with normal urine flow.

Repeated Emergency Cases

Cases where other treatments have not adequately prevented recurring obstruction.
